So in the move to becoming an IBMer, I’ve started doing some digging on what its going to be like working for IBM. There are many bloggers out there that work inside IBM, and they heap views, both good and bad on the company.

Of course none of these comments is any sort of official view of my employeer (old or new), and it is my own personal view, and it is in no way to be taken as anything else;

I’ve dealt with IBM people for a long long time, and I have I think so good friends over there, but the idea of working for them (in them being just SO big), is a little worrying, its more likely because its a massive change..

There are lots of blogs and forums that cover views of IBM employees, and I thought I’d look round to see what my future work lifes going to hold..

So IBM it seems is generally thought of in being strong on communication and innovation. People say that IBM expects, and generally gets, loyal employees, which is fine, companies should expect some (a lot) of loyalty from the people that work for them.

Certainly in the Ascential world I’ve always been very loyal. Hey I even go shopping in my Ascential jacket!!

IBM are seen as pretty much doing everything. There probably isnt a day when you dont see something IBM branded in your day to day life, even down the checkout tills at shops, and personal computers have always been synonymous with IBM, IBM had computing in its title 90 years before ThinkPads came along, IBM began life in 1911 as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company, a merger of three companies that would later become IBM.

The sale of its PC business to the Chinese company Lenovo has signaled what seems to be the end of an era, in that IBM now majors on business services and consulting, rather than its older areas.

One blogger posted a quote from an employee saying ‘One of the worst things about working in sales for IBM is the preconception when you walk into the room that you are just selling hardware. You are put in a box

The IBM name itself has changed over time, in 1924 it changed its name to International Business Machines Corporation and in the 1960s began to concentrate on computers rather than tabulators and typewriters.

After acquiring PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting, IBM became country
