So we got in late last night, and discovered that Stockholm has mainly closed.. It seems that on a Sunday most parts of Stockholm close at 10pm.. a bit of a problem really, so our first evening at FISM was a bit of a wash out, but it certainly changed today.
I feel very very upbeat about magic now, FISM is completely different to any other convention I’ve been to. It’s got organisation, style, a bit of attitude and some class, very good content.
Today after registration we sat through the stage competition (well the first day of it..) There were some exceptional performances, including I.M.AGI.A who did a great removals/packing box illusion set, floating a large packing create with a lady inside, turning it upside down, and eventually bringing her out, followed by her angry mother… it had a great eye for little subtle touches, and personally would be my favourite so far. Gaston from Germany, one of the finger flickers I think, did a great Magicians anonymous routine, talking about his addiction to the art, how he’s lost all his life and how he could stop at anytime, it was a great comedy act with some good skills as well, and got him a standing ovation. Lastly the most notable performance was from Xavier Tapias (spain) who collected rubbish and trash from on stage and made a ‘rubbish’ companion, who then got up off the park bench and walked over the stage.. truly magic..
The opening ceremony this afternoon was again out of this world, ballet dancers in large inflatable orbs, lasers, balloons, smoke large screen projections and more magic… Off to midnight magic to see some more performances this evening.. so far it just rocks…
