I’d like one of these, I’d like to replace our Mini Mac in the front round that we use to play DVD’s and music and videos with a nice small slim wireless N compatible Apple TV, but, and this in my opinion is a huge issue, there is no support for DVD’s.
sure before anyone shouts, I can rip the DVD into iTunes and play it from there, but I’d actually like to have my menu systems, and heavens forbid, just get a normal DVD and slide it into the system and play it direct from the shop/friend/rental place without having to wait for it to encode!
I think this is the only reason I’ve not got a Apple TV yet, and it seems like a glaring error on Apples part not to have a DVD slot in there.. There doesn’t even appear to be a breakout box supplied by anyone to get round it either..

What’s wrong with a dvd player to play dvds? You can get a nice upscaling one for less than £50 now and the dvd format is on borrowed time anyway.
I love my apple tv just for the MythBusters, South Park and Paddling/Snowboarding video device I use it as. I’m really glad Apple didn’t include a dvd player, as that would make it the 5th device under my telly to do so. I also use an Elgato turbo 264 to help speed the encoding along.

Jim, yes your right in some respects… I’d actually like only one device under the TV, although I have two (sky+ and the minimac) swapping the minimac out for a appleTV plus a seperate DVD player would work, but I’d still rather just have a nice simple setup.. DVD is a dying format, but unfortunately stuff still comes on DVD and you need a player, unless you’re happy to encode and store. The Elgato turbo 264 does look good.. I’ll have a check on it.. I might have to pop round and look at your appleTV

Easy then, throw out the Sky Box! Having to pay for all those adverts and supporting Murdoch can’t be easy.. You’ll thank me.
